British Sports Cars Alaska was formed in 1998 as a loose association of people who own and drive British Sports Cars. Loosely referred to as a club, the founding tenet of the group is, that there will be no meetings. The purpose of the group is to provide a resource for British Sports Car owners which will enable them to keep their cars running and out on the open road where they belong. To accomplish the above, the members share information with one another through a monthly Newsletter. Problems are aired, questions asked, answers offered and suggestions given. Only owners of British Sports Cars can belong. |

British Sports Cars led the introduction of the two seater sports car in America, the first of which came to the United States after World War II. GI's returning from England brought the sporty little cars home, often with the steering wheel on the wrong side, where they could be enjoyed on our open roads. The first model, was probably the MG-TC which looked much like an American car from the 30's. It had spoke wheels, open fenders, running boards and canvas top & side curtains. These were soon followed by other makes such as Jaguar, Triumph, Austin Healey, Morgan and Sunbeam. The cars presented special problems for their owners. American wrenches didn't fit, the electrical systems were grounded on the wrong side, carburetors were of an unknown type and parts sometimes took weeks to arrive. Even the parts of the car had different names. The hood was a bonnet, the top was a hood, the trunk was a boot, and the car burned petrol instead of gas. Because of these challenges, a certain camaraderie has developed amongst British Sports Car owners. British Sports Cars Alaska's goal is to ensure that these great little machines are properly preserved and maintained so they can be driven and enjoyed for many years to come. The members can be seen out on Alaska's highways either alone, or in small groups, during the summer months. They have a common bond, have overcome similar problems and share the joy of driving these unique little cars. There are over 75 members, with 8 marques represented: MG, Triumph, Austin Healey, Jaguar, Sunbeam, Morgan, Lotus, and Marcos. |
